Managing the Psychological Impact of Diabetes

Many people find it hard coping with their diagnosis, whether that is type 1 or type 2 there are many things that will have to change. Some people can take this in their stride and make small changes that will make a difference but for a lot of people they find it hard to come to terms with their diagnosis. I have been asked about what I think about how being diagnosed with diabetes has affected me and it can be hard. I, like most people have ups and downs. I wouldn't know where to start talk...

The effects of alchohol

I was at the doctors yesterday and saw yet another article on how drinking alcohol is bad for your health. Afterwards I was talking to a friend who said that she thought because I was diabetic I wasn't able to drink anyway! I explained that I just needed to be extra careful by making sure I eat before I go out and don't get wasted! People with diabetes are more likely to have a hypo when drinking, this is due the liver reducing the amount of glucose it produces. This is so the liver can clean...

Blood Tests

I have a check up next week with my Diabetic Consultant, before my appointment I have to get some blood tests done. I went this week and was very surprised to see 8 vials of blood - I am sure this is the most I have ever had! It isn't too much of a problem as it is only 1 needle - it just means it stays in for longer. The tests also took longer than normal because the nurses must now wipe the chair after each person, wear gloves and use a disposable band around your arm instead of the reusable o...

500 Rule

I received a comment from a user who uses the 500 rule when carb counting “Had a look at the sight, Just a quick comment on Carb Ratio. to calculate your ratio you (can) divide 500 by your total daily insulin. i.e all your lantus and novo rapid you take in the day. For example my total daily insulin is 48 so 500/48.4 I do all my calculations using this ratio and my results have been amazing.” I do know this works for many people so if you are having difficulty calculating a ratio this wo...

Flying Lessons

My mother in law was buying everyone flying lessons for their birthdays. She was told that insulin dependant diabetics were unable to have lessons even with a GP note. I thought this was ridiculous as I have very good control and have always managed to do other things with a self-certified declaration. I am assuming the reasoning is incase I have a hypo and crash the plane. I then re...

Stress and Glucose Levels

We all live a very hectic life and deal with stress on a daily basis. However people with diabetes should try and keep this to a minimum (easier said than done!). Stress can cause you sugar levels to increase, stress comes from two main places: external sources, such as demanding jobs, problematic relationships and financial problems; and internal sources: how we perceive and respond to these and other events. When you are under stress, your body works overtime to help you cope. One of the wa...
