Party Weekend

We have all had a great weekend - although I think I wasn't a good diabetic! We went to my in-laws for a birthday party, the first problem was being in a traffic jam for over two hours and no I wasn't prepared. I know I always say to people make sure you have hypo stoppers in the car but I didn't have any! So after deciding my levels were low and baby Steel shouting to get out I was dreading the next 5 minutes let alone the next hour in this jam - but my super sister-in-law (who was with us) sav...

I think January is the hypo month…!

Number of hypos this week: 5 Sugar range: 2.3 to 17.2 Sleepless nights: 3 Hours of exercise: 2 OK so it's not been the best week for my blood sugars. I have decided why I am having so many hypos is the fact I have not been eating supper. We have been eating tea late so I have therefore not felt like eating anything just before I go to bed, and it looks like I personally need that so I don't hypo at night. The highs and lows of my levels have meant a 5 day headache and therefore a few...

Weekly News Roundup 21/01/11

It seems to be a quiet news week regarding diabetes but a couple of articles have got my attention: There is a study that is looking at a type 2 drug called Januvia and the possibility of this helping people with type 1. Before everyone gets excited about no more injections the purpose of the drug will be to improve overall glucose control not to replace insulin. It will therefore help those people who are having poor control. The study is following 120 people with type 1 diabetes, the side e...

January is already feeling like a long month…

What a rubbish start to the week I had last week. I had already eaten my tea and given myself enough insulin, but around about 9pm I thought I would eat that last bit of chocolate in the fridge. So I ate all three pieces and very tasty it was, so when I was going to bed at 10pm I thought I had better give myself insulin for the chocolate as well as my levemir. So like a good diabetic this is what I did, however straight after I thought may be I should just check what my BS are. They were 2.3.......

Weekly News Roundup 14/01/11

There's always lots of media attention surrounding diabetes and this week has been no different. One study that got my attention was diabetic men are prone to damaged sperm! The study of a whopping 27 men suggested there was more DNA damage to sperm in those with diabetes. They are therefore concerned about the impact this will have due to the increase in diabetes. Can we really have a study that clarifies anything on just 27 people!? I can say that I wont be losing any sleep over this study. ...

First Week Of Jan!

I can not believe we are already approaching the middle of January! I have kind of stuck to my diet, I say kind of as I was great all week but then had guests over the weekend so we finished all the nibbles that was left over from Christmas! The good news though is that I am starting week 2 with no nibbles in the house. I did loose 2lbs so its a great start, I did go to the gym a few times and have got into swimming. I have had to reduce my levemir at night and in the morning, at the beginning o...

Back to Normality

Christmas is officially over in the Steel household we have taken down the tree and Christmas decorations and they are now packed away in the garage for another year! It's been a very hectic two weeks starting with my bi-annual visit to the diabetic specialist. This went well my HbA1C is down to 8.0 from 8.3, still high I know but at least he can see I am getting back to looking after myself after my baby boy. The last year has been hard keeping to reasonable levels as all of a sudden you are no...
