Amputations on the increase

I was sent an article from a friend last week about amputations on people with diabetes. I was shocked that the article said the number was increasing I thought this was worrying as it would assume people are not controlling their diabetes well and are having long periods of high sugar levels. The article said the study found that it was amputations in people with type II that was on the increase and this may be due to people not being diagnosed quickly. Again I think this is worrying as I would hope GP’s are looking for signs, many people do not go to the GP but means they are not taking notice of the signs. This just shows we still have a long way to go to educate people to look at the early warning signs.

On the positive side the number of amputations for people with type I has decreased, fingers crossed with new insulin regimes this will continue to go down.
