Hypo Alert Dogs

I was reading about hypo alert dogs yesterday and thought I would share some information about them. We all know hypoglycaemia itself or the avoidance of it is an acute daily problem for people with diabetes, but when accompanied by loss or partial loss of warnings it can be life threatening and have a distressing effect on the person with diabetes and their families. There can be a great reduction in the quality of life for all concerned.

Diabetic Hypoglycaemia alert dogs are trained to become sensitive to glucose levels in people who have rising or falling blood glucose levels. These levels give off a different scent than when their blood sugars are within the normal range. The dog with its keen sense of smell has the ability to alert their owners and get help even before symptoms of hypoglycaemia are felt.
