Week 18 – Disposal of Needles!

I was talking to my diabetic nurse yesterday about disposing of needles. When I was first diagnosed I was told to put my used needles in a rigid none clear container, for example a washed bleach bottle, then to dispose of in the general waste. After being diagnosed nobody then talks to you about needle disposable, which I find a bit odd considering it is important to make sure they are disposed of appropriately, you wouldn’t want them put into the bin without any protection.

The policy that my current specialist have is to get a sharpsafe (sharpbin) on prescription from your GP. Once this bin is full you should then give it to the GP so they can dispose of it the same way they do their own sharps. The sharp bin will then be available on prescription so you will be able to get a new one from the pharmacy.

The problem is this is governed by the local PCT and even then GP’s do not have to take your sharps bin from you. I was given a small bin yesterday so when this is full I will try and give it to the GP to dispose of, I will let you know if I come across any problems.

I am now 33 weeks pregnant and feeling more tired as I am not sleeping so well, keeping my glucose levels under control is difficult. I have started to leave work early this week which has helped me relax a bit more. I just need to remember that you don’t have to do everything!

Until next week x
