Read what things have affected me this week and my thoughts on any recent news articles.

Welcome!

Welcome to diabetic friend and my weekly blog, I hope you find our website useful. It’s been very interesting setting the site up, even my husband has learnt a thing or two about diabetes and he’s lived with me from day one!

Diabetes has been in the news a lot recently, mainly due to the increase in the number of people diagnosed with type 2. However you also get the good points like Fibi Ward’s book, No Added Sugar; she has written about her feelings after learning she was diabetic and how she is managing to live a ‘normal’ teenage life. When first thinking about the website, a year ago, my aim was to help other diabetics live life to the full and not let diabetes affect what they do and I think Fibi epitomises this philosophy.

The most recent news article is about a new drug that can help stop the pancreas attacking itself for newly diagnosed type 1 diabetics. This will only work if given at the very early stages of diagnosis. This is a huge breakthrough, I just wish the media would stop fooling us into thinking there is a cure. The article can be found on my homepage.

You have joined me at a very interesting and exciting time in my life as we are expecting our first baby. We had been planning this since last year and I did everything right by getting my HbA1c below 7 and taking 5mg of folic acid daily (prescription only) before conception. My diabetic specialist said due to this planning I had given our baby the best start. I am only 15 weeks so still plenty of time left, however I have already struggled keeping my glucose levels as tightly controlled as they were. Night time seems to be the worst and I have been waking up at about 4am with low sugar levels. I have reduced my night time insulin and this seems to be better. It’s going to be a rollercoaster keeping my glucose at a reasonable level throughout my pregnancy and I will keep you posted with my progress.

Please enjoy the website and talk to others, whether you are diabetic, or you know someone who is, you should find diabetic friend useful. Apologies for the online diary function not working as yet, but full service is planned for August.
